Ride the
HOV Lane.

On a match day, driving yourself to NRG means 60–90 minutes in I-45 and I-610 gridlock, then a parking ordeal. Houston's Park & Ride buses run only on the HOV/HOT lane — highway speed, straight past the traffic. Park once at a lot near you, and let the bus and the Red Line do the rest. This is the single biggest time-saver of the tournament.

Why the HOV lane wins

This is the math at the heart of it: from Fuqua P&R, downtown is about 22 minutes by bus — versus 90 minutes for a private car stuck in match day traffic on the same route. The bus isn't in that traffic. It's in a dedicated lane built for exactly this. Multiply that across a group of six or eight people who would otherwise be in two or three cars, each paying to park near a packed stadium, and the Park & Ride isn't just faster — it's the only sane option.

  2. HOV bus to downtown Highway speed in the HOV lane to Central Station — the downtown hub where every P&R bus arrives.
  3. Transfer to the Red LineAll three rail lines meet at Central Station. Switch to the Red Line heading south.
  4. Red Line to the stadium Trains run every 6 minutes at peak. Off at Stadium Park/Astrodome, then a 10-minute walk to the gates.
✓ Buy your pass the night before

A single ride is $1.25; the all-day pass is $3 and covers the bus and the rail. Buy it in the RideMETRO app the night before — kiosk lines at the lot run 15+ minutes on match days, and you do not want to spend your early-morning head start standing in one.

Match day tips

Leave by 7:30 AM

For a noon kickoff, an early start clears Central Station before the surge and gets you into the AC before the heat peaks.

Two-car Red Line trains

During the World Cup the Red Line runs two-car trains — doubled capacity through the busiest stretch.

One pass, whole day

The $3 day pass covers your return too. Hold it; you'll re-tap on the way home.

Park once, relax

No stadium parking, no post-match lot crawl. Your car waits quietly at the suburban lot.

★ The corridor connection

If you haven't booked yet, the lots double as a lodging strategy: staying near a Park & Ride turns the entire suburban metro into viable, affordable World Cup accommodation. See The Escape Corridor for the southeast play around El Dorado and Bay Area.

Questions fans ask

Why is Park & Ride faster than driving?
The buses run only on HOV/HOT lanes, so they move at highway speed while private cars sit in I-45 and I-610 gridlock for 60–90 minutes. From Fuqua, downtown is ~22 minutes by bus versus ~90 in traffic.
Which lot should I use?
South/Pearland → Fuqua (~22 min). Friendswood/Clear Lake/Webster → El Dorado or Bay Area (~28 min). Katy/west → Addicks (~28 min). The Woodlands/north → Kuykendahl (~35 min).
What does it cost and where do I buy it?
$1.25 per ride or $3 for an all-day pass covering bus and rail. Buy the day pass in the RideMETRO app the night before to skip the 15-minute kiosk lines.
When should I leave?
By 7:00–7:30 AM for a noon match. That clears Central Station ahead of the crowd and puts you in NRG's air conditioning before the heat index climbs. See Move Before Noon.
