⚠ Jul 4 is not a normal match day. Houston's Independence Day fireworks — at Minute Maid Park, Hermann Park, and multiple suburban sites — run 9 PM–10:30 PM. Traffic on I-45, I-610, I-10, and US-59 is severely congested from approximately 7 PM onward, regardless of the match kickoff time.

The post-match hold window extends to 6:30–7:00 PM minimum

If the R16 has a noon kickoff (TBD), the standard 5:30 PM exit window coincides with Independence Day pre-fireworks traffic building. Extend your hold inside NRG or a nearby air-conditioned space until at least 6:30 PM. If the kickoff is later, adjust accordingly once times are announced.

P&R buses run modified schedules — check ridemetro.org the week of Jul 4

METRO typically runs enhanced holiday service but the routing and frequency may differ from the standard World Cup weekend schedule. Confirm Route 249 and Route 229 Jul 4 times specifically — do not assume standard World Cup weekend service applies on a federal holiday.

Rideshare surge: plan for 4–6x and 60–90 min wait, not the usual 3x

Every rideshare driver in Houston is working Jul 4 — between the fireworks crowds and the World Cup crowd, demand is stacked. If your group needs rideshare for the return, order at 2:30 PM (immediately after final whistle) and wait inside NRG. By the time the ride arrives you'll be past peak congestion.

Red Line is your best exit — but expect standing room only until 4 PM

Rail is unaffected by road traffic. The Red Line runs its normal match day frequency. It will be packed for the first 90 minutes post-match. If you can wait until 4 PM to board, you'll get a seat. Before 4 PM: standing only, but moving. Still beats any road option on Jul 4.

Jul 4 bottom line: Extend every timeline by 60–90 min vs. a standard match day. The match is the easiest part of Jul 4 logistics. The fireworks are the variable that breaks plans.

The earlier you clear Central Station — before 8:00 AM — the smoother the transfer. After 8:30 AM on Jun 20, platform queuing begins. After 9:30 AM, it is a crowd event in itself.

Large groups boarding at P&R lots may not all make the same train at Central Station. Designate a meeting point before you leave your accommodation: Central Station platform, south end, near the NRG signage. If separated, do not board without your group. Wait at that point.

Insulin, EpiPens, CPAP, prescription drugs — what gets through and how

Prescription medications — allowed, carry documentation

Prescription medications are permitted through NRG security. Carry them in the original labeled pharmacy container. A printed or digital copy of your prescription adds a layer of protection if security questions you. This applies to all nations' prescriptions — no US prescription required.

Insulin, EpiPens, auto-injectors — allowed with soft-sided case

Insulin and auto-injectors (including EpiPens) are medically exempt from the clear bag policy. Carry them in a small soft-sided medical case alongside a letter from your doctor if possible. Declare them proactively at the security checkpoint — do not wait to be asked. Ice packs for insulin storage: small frozen packs are allowed if medically necessary.

CPAP machines and medical equipment — use the ADA/medical exemption lane

CPAP and other medical devices are allowed but must go through the ADA/accessibility security lane, not the standard bag screening. Look for ADA signage at NRG gates — these lanes are staffed by security personnel trained to process medical equipment. Allow an extra 10–15 min for this process.

What is NOT allowed regardless of medical status

Hard-sided coolers, full-size water bottles (empty soft-sided bottles are fine — fill at NRG hydration stations inside), glass containers, and outside food beyond small personal snacks. The clear bag policy (12×12×6 max) applies to everything except designated medical cases.

Pro tip: NRG's medical staff and first aid stations are located on every concourse level. If you have a heat-related medical concern inside the stadium, flag any stadium staff member — they have direct radio contact with medical teams. Do not wait until you feel severe symptoms.

Exchange currency at the airport — before you leave the terminal

Both Bush IAH and Hobby HOU have Travelex currency exchange counters in the arrivals area. The rates are not ideal, but they are available 24/7 during the tournament. Exchange enough USD cash for transportation emergencies, tips, and any cash-only vendors you encounter in Houston (food trucks, some parking lots).

Contactless payment via phone works on METRORail validators, P&R bus card readers, rideshare, and all NRG concessions. If your European or Saudi bank card has a contactless chip, it will also work directly on most US payment terminals. Tap-to-pay — do not insert chip if you can tap.

ATMs inside NRG charge $4–6 per transaction — avoid

There are ATMs inside NRG but fees are high. If you need USD cash, use a Chase or Wells Fargo ATM at any Houston HEB grocery store (fee-free for most international Visa/Mastercard holders) before match day. HEB locations in Webster and Friendswood are open until midnight during the tournament.

Tipping culture — 18–20% is standard in Houston restaurants

Unlike many European and Middle Eastern countries, restaurant servers in Houston depend on tips as primary income. 18% is the minimum expected, 20% is standard for good service. Most payment terminals will prompt you automatically. This applies to sit-down restaurants — not food trucks or fast food counters.

Sales tax: 8.25% is added at checkout — it is not included in listed prices

Unlike VAT-inclusive pricing in Europe and the UK, Houston prices on menus and price tags do not include sales tax. An $18 stadium beer costs $19.49 at checkout. Budget accordingly — it applies to everything except most groceries.

What to do when the plan falls apart on match day morning

Scenario A — It's 9:30 AM and you haven't left yet (noon kickoff)

Option 1 — Rideshare direct to NRG Cost: $35–60 surge. Wait: 20–35 min. Accept the surge and go now. You will still make kickoff if you order immediately. Do not wait for surge pricing to drop — it won't before a noon kickoff.

Option 2 — Waymo robotaxi (if in service area) Waymo's expanded Houston zone includes NRG area. No surge pricing — flat rate. Open the Waymo app. If a car is available near you, this beats standard rideshare pricing significantly.

Option 3 — Rail still works, but you'll be hot Take the nearest Red Line station to Stadium Park/Astrodome. At 9:30 AM the heat index is ~94°F. The walk from the station to NRG gates (10 min) is manageable but will be uncomfortable. Drink water before you leave and carry a bottle. You will make kickoff.

Scenario B — It's after 10:30 AM (noon kickoff) and you're still at accommodation

Decision point — are you going? At 10:30 AM on a match day, outdoor conditions are approaching 95°F heat index and rising. If you leave now via rideshare, you arrive at NRG around 11:15–11:30 AM. Gates are open. You make kickoff. The outdoor exposure is approximately 10 minutes (rideshare drop → gate entry). It is safe — but move with purpose: do not stand outside waiting, do not explore NRG Park before entering.

Do NOT walk significant distances after 10:30 AM If your accommodation is walking distance to a Red Line station, take a rideshare to the station instead of walking. At 10:30 AM+, every minute outdoors counts. The 10-min walk from Stadium Park/Astrodome station to NRG gates is the maximum acceptable outdoor exposure at this hour.

★ Establish your reunion point before you leave accommodation. Tell every member of your group: "If we get separated, go to Central Station — south end of the Red Line platform — and wait. Do not board a train alone." Say this in the morning. Do not wait until you're separated to figure it out.

Where separation most commonly happens

The three highest-risk separation points are: (1) Central Station platform when a train arrives and part of the group boards but others don't make it before the doors close. (2) NRG gate entry when security lines split a group across different lanes. (3) Post-match in the crowd surge exiting the stadium. Know these three moments. Slow down and count your group at each one.

If separated at Central Station — do not board without the group

Trains come every 6 minutes on match days. Missing one train costs 6 minutes. Boarding without your group and then having to backtrack costs 45 minutes. Wait at the south end of the Red Line platform. Text your group your exact position. If you have no signal: stay put. They will come back to Central Station.

If separated inside NRG — go to Guest Services, Section 100 level

NRG has Guest Services desks on every concourse. The primary location is on the 100-level concourse near Gate 1. Stadium staff can make a public announcement for lost groups. Designate a specific NRG meeting point as well — "Section 120, top of the stairs" — before you enter.

No phone signal / dead battery protocol

Houston has excellent cell coverage but NRG's interior is congested on match days — texts may delay. Establish a physical fallback: Central Station, south Red Line platform, wait up to 45 minutes before escalating. NRG has charging stations on concourse level. Charge your phone before you leave accommodation — battery matters more than almost anything else on match day.

International SIM / roaming — confirm before match day

Many European and international visitors find their roaming data plan insufficient for heavy-use match days (maps, messaging, rideshare apps). If you haven't already, purchase a US eSIM or prepaid SIM on arrival — T-Mobile and AT&T prepaid plans are available at both airports. A $15–30 week-long data plan is worthwhile insurance against being separated with no navigation.
